Interview Questions 1166

  • Hi,

I am new to IT Auditing and going to appear for IT Auditor interview. Dont know what will be asked. Can anybody give me any idea about the questions? Material to find answers and area to be focused on??

    Thanks

    Sox Auditor

  • I’ve been asked questions related to scope.
for example if a client has 300 applications and there is limited time, what criteria would you use to scope the audit?
also, questions like what would you do if…

    • an IT manager told you they spent USDUSDUSDUSDUSDUSDUSD on hw and it was the wrong decision. would you write them up? would you ignore it? other?
they try to gain an understanding of whether you understand controls and frameworks as well as your experience. they often want to hear about your experience so some examples are helpful
      Good luck.

  • Thank you ugogirl for your response.
I have been following this forum for past couple of weeks. You are one of those who are regular visitors to this forum and provide useful and practical solutions to the needies. I was expecting you, kymike or Denis to respond. I finally got yours. Thanks again.
I have couple of questions, perhaps you can ans:

    1. I have IT background (Masters in Computer Sci), however, I dont have professional experience in IT. I got trainning from experts of Sox to get into this field. Now a days I am working on PCAOB Audit Standards 2, IT Control Obj Ffor Sarbances-Oxley downloaded from ISACA.org, Coso and Cobit Frame work, a couple of docs from my trainners, and discussions on diff forums such as this. Could you pls suggest me if I need to do anything apart from this?
2)Do I need to have knowledge of accounting techniques used ( single entry accounting or double entry accounting systems)? I am familiar with double entry system.
I appreciate your spirit of helping others. People like me learn a lot from exchanging words between experts on this forum. You guys are assets for this forum. Keep this spirit burning…
      Thank you

  • Ugogirl, can you pls provide me with some examples of critical processes and implemented controls so that I can use them in interviews?

You’ve got the main points quite well covered there. You might want to also consider hot topics such as End-User Computing - there is an excellent white paper by PwC on this subject.

  • Thanks for the response Denis…
Could you please ans my second question about knowledge of Accounting Tech??
One more thing…do you think that I need to refer any particular book for beginners??
    Thanks

  • auditorofsox,
you are reviewing some good documents. I find that scope of an engagement and the level of granularity is where I find a lot of differences between clients. At some clients the test scripts are very simple. At others, we are required to be very detailed/granular which feels ridiculous. some places we make copies of evidence and include in the binder. other places we review and summarize. the challenge is when external auditors want to pull the same sample…then it takes a lot of time for the staff to do that again.
IT auditors don’t have to have an IT hands-on experience. However, I do know several that started in IT and the moved into IT audit. I think if you have hands-on experience then it helps you forumulate questions and relate to the employees of the company you are auditing better. Being a quick learner and understanding their IT environment can also be an asset for you.
An accounting background is not required, however a general understanding of accounting and finance are generally prefered. Some controls are automated and others are manual so good knowledge of accounting and finance will be helpful. I’ve run into several IT auditors that are also CPAs.
    Good luck on your interview.

  • Thank you ugogirl,
    This is helpful.
