Where is the sanity 220

  • What is it with these SOX IT systems auditors? Do they not have a clue that a reporting process involves checks and balances outside of the reporting software package. So far my experience with these auditors is that if a analyst can change a number there is a probelm. Why are they seperating IT systems from the whole reporting process where there are significant checks and balances. We work in a excel base reporting package, anything could be changed. Where is the sanity.

  • Hi,
The whole point of the audit is to ensure that you have sufficient controls in place that will capture any chaning of your spreadsheets.
All changes should be auditable, i.e. for each change made there should be a trail that leaves an auditor to conclude that the change made was duly authorised.
    Cheers

  • One thing to remember is that if the auditor finds nothing wrong, he/she has no justification for his/her new position. Somewhat like a lawyer, trained to find problems and not necessarily solutions. Just my USD.02 worth.

I think SOX is one area where the auditor bashing is actually less justified than normal. As a result of SOX the firms have had a huge increase in their workload which they can’t staff adequately and cause all sorts of liability issues - SOX is a nightmare for them.
