Access Databases 1683

  • We are wrapping remediating for .xls FR EUCs and are now beginnning work on Access databases. Has anyone else in the forum remediated for Acess databases and if so:

    1. Did you use any tools to help
    2. Did you consider Access databases to fall under EUC controls or Application controls
    3. Any lessons learned or recommendations
      thanks,
      buppy

  • Well… we had 3 access databases
We started to look at them as EUC, but ended up removing them as no one knew who made them, how they were made, and why we were not using other systems which could with a few minor changes do the same job.
Now we are a MS Access free environment, and there’s not one single person that miss them

    1. Did you consider Access databases to fall under EUC controls or Application controls
At a large automotive client, we did consider access databases to fall under the realm of EUC controls. However, not all access databases were brought into scope. We assessed the access database based on the following criteria:
    1. Financial relevance of the data being used in the database (ie. is the information used to book a GL entry?)
    2. Level of database complexity
    1. Any lessons learned or recommendations
The biggest recommendation is to really understand what the database is used for and more importantly, how the data effects the financials.

  • Hi - Oracle and SQL-Server are our standards and Access is only used as an EUC and IT developers tool in our organization. Hopefully, other members will comment.

    1. Did you use any tools to help
These links might be worth exploring
      google.com/search?hl=en-and-q=microsoft access sox tools
      microsoft.com/office/showcase/sarbanes/partnersol.mspx
    2. Did you consider Access databases to fall under EUC controls or Application controls
If you have special Production Access data bases where there is a reliance on the information from a financial standpoint, I see the same applicability you would with an Excel spreadsheet used in a similar fashion – even if it’s entirely EUC oriented.
    3. Any lessons learned or recommendations
In many cases Access data bases can be ported to SQL-Server, Oracle, or other RDBMS environments, where by you gain benefits in backup/recovery, multi-user update, transactional logging, and all the goodness found in a real data base environment 🙂
