Using SSN as a customer or employee identifier 289
-
I understand that you can no longer use an individuals SSN to identify them in a database. I am trying to find out if this is true and if so, is it a SOX requirement or some other legislation. Can anyone help me to find some information on this? Thanks.

Nothing to do with SOx. This is a privacy issue.
I don’t fully understand the legal situation in the US as I am not American. I live in the UK and along with most European countries we have data protection legislation. I believe the US situation is more evolved from court cases going back to the 70s - something to do with constitutional right to privacy. I believe there may be some limited legislation supporting this.

Definitely not a SOX issue.

Due to the number of ‘Identity Thefts’ here in the states, laws and other state regulations have pretty much restricted the use of SS# to identify a person.
